November 2019 Artist of the Month: Phumzile Buthelezi (Johannesburg)

We are pleased to announce that our Artist of the Month is Phumzile Buthelezi. Her mixed media collage work is constructed from patterned fabrics – rich with energy and reflective of the Artist’s profound admiration for her Spirituality and Ancestors.

Rather than predetermined and anticipated, the Artist foregoes investigations into the unknown, never truly envisioning how a collage art work comes to fruition and with no pre-determined outcome, the works tend to take a life of their own- dictating unique characteristic to her narratives.

Phumzile is untrained, leading her to a career of unlimited possibilities and aptitudes for a multitude of materials. Both a Mother and a Daughter, her career as an Artist started as an assistant to embroiders; knitters and weavers in her hometown of Katlehong.

Buthelezi has asserted herself as a strong, spiritually driven young Womxn artist, forging her identity in the local arts community as a strong, black female artist within the South African arts Community.

Art Afrique is pleased to exhibit a large collection of Phumzile's works at our head office at Vic Yards, Johannesburg and at our new sister gallery ‘Villa Africa’ in Loop Street, Cape Town for the month of December and January 2020.
